Shallow Dome Awning

Imagine drinks on this portal as the sun sets. Screening, shade sails, patio covers and awnings might all shield us from the sun, but a fixed awning can serve its purpose year ‘round and under all kinds of circumstances and locations.

We built this awning to follow the curve of the stonework precisely. Light colored fabric minimizes the visual weight of the installation, and the shallow mount leaves the portal arch open yet sheltered from the sun. The shadow cast by the awning must not only protect the opening, but still provide a similar protection as the sun moves across the sky. Other than the last hour of the day, a seat under that stone portal is sheltered by the awning virtually all day long. Every consideration should be taken when designing custom awnings so that the visual impact is in keeping with the site, purpose and special needs at the site.
